MALE HAIR LOSS

Androgenetic alopecia has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head.  The hair above the ears and at the nape of the neck is unaffected.  The hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone.  The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

“I am a 34 year old female with hair loss. I have been suffering from thinning hair for about 4 years. I have used Minoxidil for 2 years, I read about lots of different alternative treatments, but are there any other alternatives that really work? I hate the idea of putting this on my scalp for the rest of my life. I hate this product and do not want to be dependant on a prescription drug. Is there any real alternative?”

You may be thinking that at the age of 34 it is very unusual to have thinning hair. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are as many women with hair thinning problems as men, but women very rarely go bald like men. It may surprise you to know, too, that hair loss in very young women is rampant and on the increase. By very young, I mean late teens and early twenties. However, this does not answer your question.

There is always a reason for hair thinning and the most important way to counteract it is to correctly diagnose the cause or as in most cases the causes of the thinning. The causes vary enormously from low iron levels, insufficient proteins in your diet, hormonal effects or thyroid anomalies, menopause, PCOS  just to mention a few.

Once the causes has been established, the action you should take will be quite straightforward. In your case, you are on Minoxidil, which sometimes stablises the thinning, but not always. The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.

Male Hair Loss

12.05.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

The most common belief is that men are just okay with going bald. The truth is not so. Men hate going bald and do not accept hair loss as a fact of life. Men suffering from androgenetic alopecia are in fact longing to bring back their lost locks. Infact, their situation causes a huge amount of self impossed stress and emotional dilemma.

It is devastating to think that hair loss for a man is caused genetically and is inherited. So it will go on from one generations to generations the next. Is it possible for men to prevent MPB?  Most men think that there’s nothing that can be done to prevent hair loss. Up until now. Speak to a Westminster Trichologist and get the facts.

Male Hair Loss [ Asian Hair ]

12.05.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

What is male hair loss [ male pattern baldness ] androgenic alopecia ?

Male hair loss is the most common type of hair loss. It is caused by increased sensitivity to male sex hormones [ androgens ] in certain parts of the scalp, and is passed on from generation to generation.

In the past, baldness was often seen as something unfortunate or undesirable. However, this attitude has changed over the years and nowadays a clean-shaven head is usually considered both fashionable and attractive.

What causes male hair loss?

Some men have areas on the scalp that are very sensitive to the male sex hormones that circulate in men’s blood. The hormones make the hair follicles [ from which hair grows] shrink. Eventually, they become so small that they cannot replace lost hairs. The follicles are still alive, but are no longer able to perform their task.

The condition usually starts in men aged 20 to 30 and follows a typical pattern. First, a receding hairline develops, and gradually the hair on top of the head also begins to thin. Eventually, the two balding areas meet to form a typical U-shape around the back and sides of the head. The hair that remains is often finer, and does not grow as quickly as it used to.

Can male hair loss be prevented?

Male hair loss is genetically determined [passed on from parents]. Although a doctor can offer medical treatment to improve the condition, this may have side effects. So you are far better off having a chat with one of our Westminster Trichologists first.
